The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was sentenced of orchestrating a government overthrow in last fall and given more than over two decades in prison, but he continued under house arrest pending court reviews.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" emerged.

This involved seeking to disable his tracking device and a call for a demonstration that could "allow for a possible escape.

Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears

In a paperwork permitting the detention, Justice Moraes said data from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his escape.
