A renowned South African radio and club DJ has been shot dead in the nation's economic hub Johannesburg, sending shockwaves across a country grappling with rampant crime.

Warrick Stock, widely recognized as DJ Warras, was gunned down in the city centre on a Tuesday afternoon.

Officials stated the 40-year-old entertainer was approached by a trio of assailants, with one shot at him before fleeing on foot.

The motive of the attack has not been established and no one has been arrested have taken place, police said.

Details of the Attack

Authorities revealed that Stock was targeted as he was departing from a building in the vicinity of the Carlton Centre.

He had devoted time at the property managing the implementation of safety equipment, which had been controversially occupied by squatters, according to reports.

"It is alleged the man was approached by three unidentified men after parking his vehicle, and they began shooting at him before fleeing the scene on foot," authorities confirmed.

Security camera video reportedly captured a suspect with dreadlocked hair and dressed in what looked like a guard's attire opening fire on Stock before making his escape.

The DJ attempted to flee after he was wounded but collapsed on the opposite side of the road.

It was further revealed that Stock had an unused firearm and no items were stolen during the attack.

Key evidence, like cartridges, were discovered at the location.

Appeal for Witnesses

Police have appealed anyone who saw the event who may have witnessed the attack to assist with the investigation.

"Evidence suggests they walked a long distance after the attack, and officers have been attempting to locate them to determine their destination," remarked an authority figure.

Outpouring of Grief

His family member, a close relative, said the family was struggling to come to terms with the loss.

"I am devastated. I cannot express the pain," she stated.
"We know he was a champion for numerous individuals. He addressed issues courageously about issues not many people were willing to discuss. This is a devastating blow."
