Astronaut Reveals Depression After Wave of Backlash Following Journey

A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her struggle with mental health after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

Amanda Nguyen – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission in April, which also included well-known figures.

The high-profile flight was heavily criticized by some, who questioned its cost and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash overshadowed her achievement under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a public message, recalling a phone call from a mission companion in the aftermath of the landing.

She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she revealed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

The researcher, who has conducted studies in women's health research and operated research during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – from her lab work and years of training to the historic significance of her roots – was overshadowed under the tide of sexist vitriol.

She is widely recognized for her tireless campaigning protecting the rights of sexual assault survivors.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was paused after being assaulted during her time as a student, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

The Fog Begins to Lift

Now, eight months after fulfilling her dream, she noted the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she thanked the well-wishers whose messages of encouragement were her lifeline. “Your support rescued me,” she said.

She noted that amid the criticism, significant positive outcomes had emerged from the mission, including spotlight on her scientific work and platforms for her activism.

The Historic Journey

The self-operating spacecraft launched from Texas in the spring, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that passed the edge of space.

The group of women also included accomplished professionals from various fields.

The enterprise behind the flight is a private space firm launched by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
